"while American health care is the most expensive it constantly underperforms"

"Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane."
-Martin Luther King, Jr., Civil Rights Leader and Minister

We have heard it said that the American health care system is the best in the world. We do know for sure that it is the most expensive in the world but it seems it is not the best or at least Americans don't top the list as the healthiest people in the world. Statistics from the CIA World Fact Book lists the United States at 50th for life expectancy, behind such countries as Japan, Canada, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Israel, Spain, Norway, Germany pretty much all of Europe. We also rank 44th on infant mortality behind such countries as Cuba, the European Union, Italy, Greece, Ireland, Canada, U.K., New Zealand, Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, South Korea, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Czech Republic, Norway, Finland, Hong Kong, Japan, Sweden and more.
The Commonwealth Fund in a survey of health care costs by country found that "while American health care is the most expensive it constantly underperforms", when compared to other countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden, and the U.K.
I don't think that we Americans have much to be smug about when it comes to health care. When compared to the rest of the industrialized world we perform poorly and in some areas such as infant mortality we are close to a third world country. The fact that we spend the most money but have an inferior health care system should tell us something. Part of the reason for the disparity is that so many Americans can't afford coverage or are denied by their insurers with the result being that millions of Americans are unable to get the care they need. Reform of the American health care system is way overdue. If health care reform doesn't pass in congress it will be because the United States Congress, specifically the Republicans, the Red Dog Democrats and of course the Hartford's man Joe Leiberman have been bought and paid for by the health insurance industry and have sold out the American people.

politics is the worst arena to expect people to do the right thing. It takes great moral courage and a standard of decency to maintain ones principals

“The two pillars of 'political correctness' are:
a) willful ignorance
b) a steadfast refusal to face the truth”

-George MacDonald, author, poet and minister

Follow the money

Kindness and decency take second place to self interest and greed. It is a moral choice that everyone makes for themselves. Are our politicians honest brokers or bought and paid for dirtbags? Politics is the worst arena to expect people to do the right thing. It takes great moral courage and a standard of decency to maintain ones principals in the face of the money and influence from lobbyists, unless you are independently wealthy. There are a few and they stand out, like Jay Rockefeller (D WV). Mark Shields said it best, "If you can't drink their booze, take their money, sleep with their women and then vote against 'em, you don't belong in politics." It is up to all Americans to question the motives and demand transparency of our elected officials, something the Republican Conservatives find uncomfortable. One of the places we can go to get the facts of who gets how much money from which lobbyist is Open Secrets it is where you can see the dirty secrets that they don't want you to see. This is the place to go to follow the money.

Glenn Beck stokes the fire of extremism while verging on mania.

The most used phrase in my administration if I were to be President would be "What the hell you mean we're out of missiles?"
-Glenn Beck

Glenn Beck
Glenn Beck stokes the fire of extremism while verging on mania. He appeals to that portion of America that are insecure while pointing the finger at what he decides is the cause. There is a danger when someone with the media reach of Beck can appeal to the fears and insecurities of people who are loosing their jobs or can't find a job and need scape goats to blame.
He creatively draws fictional connections between unrelated events and people to substantiate his position. The truth, the facts and the real issues have nothing to do with Beck's mania. He uses all the code words and suggestive language tapping into the racial hatred that still exists in America and attracts those that would do violence.
What he does is not commentary he uses incendiary language that appeals to people's baser instincts while stoking the fires of fear and hatred.

Health Care
This is a no brainer, in fact the arguments are stupid. What is wrong with all Americans having health care? Nothing, it is a good thing. It is not socialism, it is social responsibility. The insurance companies are ripping off Americans. It is time to make health care affordable and fix what is bad about the health care system. The Republicans are opposed to health care, why? They are paid by the insurance industry to oppose it. Folks don't get seriously sick, because the insurance company you have will find a loop hole or some previous condition that they can point to to deny you coverage, and they will let you die. Look at their history.
Republicans opposed the social security system, fought hard against it. Millions of Americans now benefit from it and their lives would be poorer without it. The Republicans opposed medicare big time. In fact it took thirty years for the Democrats to pass it. It is now the main insurance program for millions of seniors and people with disabilities. Most Americans would oppose the ending of social security or medicare. Now the Democrats want to fix the health care system, it's time has come.

Muslims in America
Wow, the Republicans, Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and the rest of the radical Right have rounded on Muslims. Why not intern all Muslims in America like we did the Japanese in World War Two? If it was up to the Conservative Republicans that is exactly what would happen. The Republicans are insulting all honest law abiding Muslims in America and it is wrong, just wrong. These Americans don't deserve the Republicans smears. Muslims have served in the American military for over a hundred years and died in the defense of this country and to attack all Muslim Americans for an act of one man is to demean their patriotism and sacrifice. It is not want America is about and it hurts us all. America is the a nation of inclusion and to turn against a part of that America, Muslims, is an injustice to fellow Muslim Americans and all Americans.

the health insurance industry, are the real death panels

America's health care system is second only to Japan... Canada, Sweden, Great Britain, ... well all of Europe. But you can thank your lucky stars we don't live in Paraguay!
-Dan Castellaneta, Actor

The senate health bill is coming down to a vote. It is an important issue and America needs it. We have a busted health care system where the health insurance companies arbitrarily decide who get coverage and who doesn't. They also will research back and find obscure reasons to deny coverage for a major illness that the consumer thought they were covered for, there by denying coverage at a critical time in their lives. They, the health insurance industry, are the real death panels. A health bill will be good for America. America has to understand that the Republicans are supporting the lies of the health insurance companies, who are fighting to protect profit, and their monopoly. Health care premiums are out of control. It is time to reform the system. We must address the problems facing the American health care system.
This is not a perfect bill but it is a start. If it passes it will still have to go to reconciliation and be approved before it can become law. Ultimately we need to break the monopoly of the health insurance industry. We need the right to opt out of our coverage and select the best coverage and not be trapped in a system that limits choice.

We need transparency at the Fed Reserve. We need to know how much they are giving to the banks and what banks they are giving it to. Why don't the banks and the Fed want us to know what they are doing with our money? See The Huffington Post special report "Audit The Fed Effort Under Threat In House"

President Obama has concluded his Asia trip. He has generated a chorus of criticism from the Right Wing media and Conservative politicians. The statements are bogus attempts to lower the presidents standing with the American people. No matter what he did he would be criticized. There is no act, deed or accomplishment that he could do that they would not find fault with. As opposed to George W. Bush who would be praised for anything no matter how wrong, dishonest or illegal.

Recommended Book:
Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis by Al Gore
It is now abundantly clear that we have at our fingertips all of the tools we need to solve the climate crisis. The only missing ingredient is collective will.
Properly understood, the climate crisis is an unparalleled opportunity to finally and effectively address many persistent causes of suffering and misery that have long been neglected, and to transform the prospects of future generations, giving them a chance to live healthier, more prosperous lives as they continue their pursuit of happiness.
Our Choice gathers in one place all of the most effective solutions that are available now and that, together, will solve this crisis. It is meant to depoliticize the issue as much as possible and inspire readers to take action—not only on an individual basis but as participants in the political processes by which every country, and the world as a whole, makes the choice that now confronts us.
There is an old African proverb that says, "If you want to go quickly, go alone; if you want to go far, go together."
We have to go far, quickly.
We can solve the climate crisis. It will be hard, to be sure, but if we can make the choice to solve it, I have no doubt whatsoever that we can and will succeed.

Then they can hang the bastard!

There is nothing wrong with America that the faith, love of freedom, intelligence and energy of her citizens cannot cure.
-Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890 - 1969)

This is an rare moment but I find that I am in agreement with the opinion of some Right wing media. The issue is the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. I agree that he should be tried by a military tribunal and not in a civil court. The precedent has existed since World War Two, and to have him come to New York City for trial is just unnecessary. His trial in New York City would be an insult to the memory of the deceased and their families. I don't want to see him in New York with defense attorneys pleading his case and ultra liberals wringing their hands that he be given every consideration and he is innocent until proven guilty. A military tribunal would try him under the military code of justice, and while the military justice has a narrower scope than the civil courts, he would be represented by council and have a fair trial and justice would be served. Then they can hang the bastard!

Hate Speech
Just so my critics don't think I have gone soft I would like to quote the king of hate speech, Michael (sewer mouth) Savage . It is hard to believe he eats with that mouth. "Don't you understand what's a stake? ...Don't you understand the sick perverts [homosexuals] are killing all of us? ...unless this is stopped, unless the gay agenda is curtailed... you're not gonna have your own children eventually... your father would have taken a day off from pipe fitting and he would have gone in there with blood in his eyes... he would have gone crazy! ...That's how deballed you are, you're like a department store dummy most of you." This is one sick demented puppy. The fact that he is given air time on a major radio staten in a major market is a testimony to the diversity and tolerance of Americans. That they can let this bigoted, homophobe preach his hate filled ideas is a victory and test of free speech. Personally I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire.

Sarah Palin's new book is out, I can hardly wait, not. It is a waste of trees. Listening to Conservatives speak you would think she had a PhD from Harvard when the opposite is true. She struggled to get her B.A. and took six years to do it and at four different colleges. This is not what leadership is about. This woman has a simplistic view of the world and simplistic approach to domestic issues.

The fact that the dominant group in the evangelical movement are white men, would lead one to think that Palin is their secret sexual fantasy.

"Rush Limbaugh calls Palin`s book, quote, "truly one of the most substantive policy books I've read," end quote. Rush, I believe you. I cannot imagine you, in full recline on your Gulfstream, Cuban cigar in hand, struggling to get through a more substantive policy book than Sarah`s index and footnote free, score settling campaign memoir. No mind numbing charts or graphs, no big words, no scholarly Latin phrases, like caveat emptor. And I bet the pictures are, like, amazing."
-Lawrence O'Donnell

Sarah Palin has moved to the front and center again in the media. I watched her briefly on Oprah, poor Oprah looked pained trying to make sense of what Palin was saying. Listening to Palin is difficult. She babbles and while she seems to be making sense it dawns on the listener after a few minutes that it is basically incoherent. Her train of thought is erratic, she changes subject mid sentence and talks fast like she has to get it all out of her mouth before she loses the thought.
The fact that someone with her obvious intellectual deficits can generate so much interest and support from the Republican Conservative base is interesting. It has to have to do with the fact that she is a good looking woman and supports the radical wing of the Republican movement who see her as their darling and champion. The fact that the dominant group in the evangelical movement are white men, would lead one to think that Palin is their secret sexual fantasy. When watching her on TV turn the sound down while she is speaking it actually better, after all she is good to look at.
Her support for exploitation of Alaska's resources at the expense of the wild life, is unpopular with millions of Americans and has generated a massive campaign in opposition. The polar bears, wolves, seals, caribou and the rest of the Alaska wild life is a precious resource that Sarah Palin saw as expendable.
Her radical religious views are another issue. She is a part of that evangelical Right that believes the world is five thousand years old and man did not evolve but was created according to the bible. While it is her right to believe anything she wishes, and many Americans agree with her view, she supports a movement that would impose its beliefs on the nation and pervert the constitution, if one were to believe the statements of the evangelical leadership in America. J.R. Rushdoony the evangelical prophet said, "Christianity is completely and radically anti-democratic; it is committed to spiritual aristrocracy." [R.J. Rushdoony, Reconstructionist theologian, from _The Religious Right] These views are not compatible with American Democracy.
It is clear that she is politically a lightweight and it would be a disaster for the Republican party if she were to be their candidate in 2012. I will still vote for her in 2012 Republican primary but ONLY the primary, it will be good for America and insure four more years of a Democrat in office.

This economic breakdown is a result of greed and deregulation of the banking and insurance industry.

"... You are a den of vipers and thieves. I intend to rout you out, and by the grace of the Eternal God, I will rout you out."
-President Andrew Jackson, upon evicting a delegation of international bankers from the Oval Office

It is about the children. Watching a CNN news report about the financial downturn in Nevada and the amount of homeless families was disturbing. An unemployed mother of six struggles to feed and keep a roof over the heads of her children. It is a tragedy that is magnified across the country. While bankers and health insurance executives are getting bloated salaries and millions of dollars in bonuses millions of children across the country are going to school hungry while their parents struggle to find work. There is definitely something wrong with this picture. It is disgusting that these people, executives, can exploit the system for millions of dollars while children don't have breakfast.
This economic breakdown is a result of greed and deregulation of the banking and insurance industry. The health insurance industry exploits the sick while lobbyists pay off members of congress to protect their interest at the expense of the consumer who face escalating premiums. The banks have exploited the consumer through mortgages that they knew going in that millions of people couldn't handle. To say that the consumer took advantage of the banks is asinine. The banks have an army of lawyers and legal language that even many lawyers don't understand. They knew what they were doing; exploiting the naive and sometimes careless borrowers.
While Republican Conservatives fight with the Democrats and assign blame children suffer and struggle everyday. No child should go to sleep hungry or not have a warm coat in winter. Parents are struggling across America and their children suffer in the land of plenty while greed and ruthlessness rules the banks and the insurance industry and the children of the poor continue to suffer in an economic downturn not of their own making.
