Remembering all who serve.

"War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen, and I say let us give them all they want."- General William T. Sherman

9/11 reminds us all of what we lost and how the world changed on that terrible day. It is this generations Pearl Harbor. We lost our sense of invulnerability and our naive sense that the terrorists attacked others and couldn't hurt us at home. While life in America has resumed it normalcy Americans from all parts of our country have gone into harms way to defend our freedom and our way of life. Whether or not one feels the war in Iraq was justified, Americans have answered the call and continue to do so. Those men and women in our armed services serving our nation are not alone, their families and friends, and indeed should all Americans, share in the concern for them.

It only takes a look around any airport to see uniformed men and women traveling to and from bases overseas or within the United States to realize that those young people and some not so young are out there for us. Thousands have died and been wounded in our service and that has been shared by the nation.

The conflict in Iraq is winding down, unfortunately we do not see an end to the current conflict in Afghanistan. Many have challenged George Bush's wisdom and honesty with his invasion of Iraq, but Afghanistan remains a war with a greater justification in the minds of many Americans. It was the location of Al Qaeda and their allies, the Taliban. It remains unresolved and it may come down to a non-military solution to finally resolve the conflict. Our men and women of the military deserve the best that the nation can do for them, most importantly strong honest leadership from our government. To all who go in harms -god speed.

The forgotten victims deserve more than they have received. Let us not forget those first responders to the 9/11 tragedy. Many are now suffering from the effects of exposure to toxic agents and the government help has expired. The effects may take up to twenty years to manifest itself and currently many are already developing debilitating and terminal illnesses. Rep Maloney, Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Peter King (R-NY) and Michael McMahon (D-NY), have introduced a bill before congress H.R. 847, the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act to help these victims of 911. "The serious health impacts of the 9/11 disaster were both immediate and long-term, affecting thousands of Ground Zero responders and downtown residents and office workers, as well as children in the City’s school system and significant portions of the region’s population as a whole. The federal response to these health emergencies has been inadequate and disappointing because of significant funding delays, a lack of organization, and failures to respond to the full degree necessary by the administration’s health agencies." “...the modern American right... adopted irrationality as a tactic ... and faith for reason..."

"I am a democrat because I believe that no man or group of men is good enough to be trusted with uncontrolled power over others. And the higher the pretensions of such power, the more dangerous I think it both to rulers and to the subjects. Hence Theocracy is the worst of all governments. If we must have a tyrant a robber barron is far better than an inquisitor. The baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity at some point may be sated; and since he dimly knows he is doing wrong he may possibly repent. But the inquisitor who mistakes his own cruelty and lust of power and fear for the voice of Heaven will torment us infinitely more because he torments us with the approval of his own conscience and his better impulses appear to him as temptations."
C.S. Lewis, Reflections on the Psalms, ch. 3.

A lifetime spent as a Republican and a conservative has provided me with a little insight into the nature of the debate on health care and a myriad of other issues. I was a supporter of Nixon, Reagan, the Bush's. The only democrat I voted for before Obama was Carter, who is a decent man and much misunderstood. I have never quite been able to put my finger on the main point that made me move away from my Conservative Republican position. Quite possibly it was listening to too much Sean Hannity, he just oozes hypocrisy, and facts just don't seem relevant to his diatribe.
A recent book “Idiot America” by Charles P. Pierce seems to have nailed it for me. “...the modern American right that consciously adopted irrationality as a tactic.” “It is, of course, television that has enabled Idiot America to run riot with modern politics and all forms of public discourse...exchanging (rather than mistaking) fact for fiction, and faith for reason, and believing itself shrewd to have made a good bargain with itself.” It is this unfortunate and dishonest anti intellectualizing of the issues and the debate that is crucial to the rights appeal to the base. Instead of elevating the discussion they have lowered the bar to the lowest common denominator.
My fall reading list will be “Idiot America by Charles P. Peirce and “Republican Gomorrah by Max Blumenthal. This is must reading by any person who wants to understand the political situation in this country. They need to be read by both Conservative and Liberal Americans who care about the future of this country and the issues that are at stake. There is room in America for both Liberal and Conservative ideas but not of the type of Conservatism that is currently being extolled by the evangelical controlled Right and it's media hacks. Of course if someone has bought into the evangelical anti intellectual ideology and Third Wave movement such as Sarah Palin and the like, then no discussion is even possible, otherwise this is worth the time for those with the intelligence to see the difference between fact and fiction.

"...places the blame squarely on American conservatives. “If this book seems to concentrate on the doings of the modern American right,” he says, “that’s because it was the modern American right that consciously adopted irrationality as a tactic, and it succeeded very well.” Pierce does little to hide his left-leaning biases, which sometimes get to be a little much and too holier-than-thou. Perhaps it’s understandable, though, considering how palpable his frustration and anger are.

“It is, of course, television that has enabled Idiot America to run riot with modern politics and all forms of public discourse,” Pierce says, although he points a damning finger at talk radio as “the driving force in changing American debate into American argument.”

Pierce lambastes Idiot America for making a devil’s bargain, “exchanging (rather than mistaking) fact for fiction, and faith for reason, and believing itself shrewd to have made a good bargain with itself.” www.scholarsand more..

Republican response to Obama's speech to school children.

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

This is his moment, the question is will President Obama have the courage to be decisive or will he resort to the past and vote "present".

"Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better."
Harry S Truman

Will President Obama cave in to pressure from the Republicans and Right Wing media? If he does and compromises his own values and promises to the American people he will have lost the faith and hope he instilled in his supporters. It would be better for him to have fought tooth and nail for the health care bill and be defeated than to compromise and have a watered down bill that cozies up to the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries and satisfies his Republican critics. What is disappointed about President Obama is his lack of fire and determination to fight it out with his critics on the Right. We know that the Democrats in the house and Senate have for the most part, as said so eloquently by Bill Moyer, had their spines surgically removed. The leadership needed from the president has not materialized. Other than a few courageous members of the house and senate most Democrats are looking at poll numbers and quaking in their boots.

To their credit the Republicans lost the house the senate and the presidency but they still are a force to be reckoned with and are uncompromising in their determination and doggedness in their opposition to the presidents health reforms.

President Obama needs to be less conciliatory and a little more of fighter and show the leadership that has been sorely missing. This is his moment, the question is will President Obama have the courage to be decisive or will he resort to the past and vote "present".

A man of conviction, John Conyers, won't sign a health care bill without the public option, critical of President Obama

Groups Denounce Verizon Wireless Sponsorship of Controversial, Climate-change Denying Labor Day Event Verizon no friend to the environment or the American people
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - September 7 - "A coalition of more than 40 conservation and faith organizations representing millions of Americans sent a letter to Verizon Wireless on Friday asking the company to withdraw its sponsorship of Massey Energy’s Friends of America Rally. The groups, led by the Center for Biological Diversity, are extremely disappointed that Verizon Wireless chose to ally itself with right-wing extremists in an anti-union event organized to oppose climate change legislation and to celebrate mountaintop removal coal mining."

Beware of the demagogues of the Right.

"The sure foundation of the state are laid in knowledge, not in ignorance; and every sneer at education, at culture, at book learning, which is the recorded wisdom of the experience of mankind, is the demagogue's sneer at intelligent liberty, inviting national degeneracy and ruin."

George William Curtis

Boy were they, the Right Wing Republican pundits and media, so right. Obama's speech was un-American, subversive and full of leftist propaganda. To tell school children to study hard is CRAZY, is he nuts? These children might succeed and then where will the elites of the Right be, they might have to hire them and pay them a high salary. Who would pump their gas, drive trucks, cut their grass, oops they have the Mexicans to cut their grass.

Obama told the children of America to listen to their teachers, blasphemy, no way, inner city kids tell their teachers "fuck you", it happened to me. To be fair not all kids do that, but enough of them do and it sets a tone in the schools. Teachers are dedicated hard working people with high degree of education often two masters degree who are dedicated to teaching children and they often get short shrift by the conservative media, politicians and often the bureaucrats called school the administration. But they don't deserve the disrespect that they often must endure at the hands of the children they want to teach.

Obama told the children to study, why? Why, because it is good for them, it is nourishment for the mind. But the Right and some misguided parents and even school boards boycotted the speech. Hey, but maybe they are right. If a black president from a poor background who achieved great success through his own hard work, tells kids to stay in school, study hard and listen to their teachers is to these people considered subversive then shit if they are the majority we are in trouble as a nation. Beware of the demagogues of the Right.

Bill Moyer calls it like it is on the Health Care Plan. Intelligent, common sense and what we need to hear.

"Fuck you" to the American working class.
Banks can get bail outs and stimulus money. The rich get huge tax breaks under the Bush administration. But to say that financial help for the American working class is a disaster for the nation; this is hypocrisy at it's finest. See the www. attached piece.

"On Thursday's (9/3/09) Your World, Neil Cavuto repeatedly complained to Democratic strategist Taylor West that President Obama giving $85 billion in tax breaks to low and middle income families was somehow letting them get away without paying their “fair share.” As West noted, it was laughable hypocrisy for Cavuto to be attacking Obama’s tax rebates for working class families as unfair after years of Bush tax cuts for wealthy Americans. Cavuto claimed the difference was between a tax cut and a tax rebate. But as West noted, why not give stimulus to those who need it most and who will more likely spend it? West did an excellent job of holding her own. With video.

West said, "We're talking about the child tax credit and the earned income tax credit, both of which go to people and families who are working full time for a living and scraping by to support their families. So we’re not exactly talking about handouts.” More...

Republican Right has become the party of MEAN

"There is no act of treachery of meanness of which a political party is not capable; for in politics there is no honor."

Benjamin Disraeli

What is amazing is the meanness of the Republican Christian Right. And it is not just Republican Christian Right but also those Americans Conservatives who have bought into that paranoid, homophobic, bigoted, selfish belief system. The Right spouts lies and trite phrases of the Right Wing media, who play to their audience. There is a new spirit about in America and it is a meanness of the spirit. Gone is the unity following the attack of 911 when all Americans joined together as one regardless of race, or religion or national origin.

The Republican Christian Right call themselves Christians, whoa, if they are Christians then Christianity has definitely been redefined. They and the Republican Right have become the party of MEAN. Listen to them on the issues of universal health care, they opposed to it, let the health care companies rip of the American consumer. If you do not have coverage, well it's just too bad; immigration, we exploit illegal immigrants, but deny them what we all enjoy, the opportunity to become citizens; the black president, that is enough to hate him plus he's a democrat and liberal; homosexuals, deny them the right equal rights and the right to marry and discriminate against them for a life style that hurts no one; the rights of women, they want to control their bodies and deny them equal status. They are regressive, bigoted, misogynist, homophobic to name a few. They are in-explicitly anti education and specifically anti intellectual.

They are wrong, very wrong. They harm people, and won't understand it until the system they are trying to support turns against them. Then they will suddenly say but I worked for you. What they don't understand is that the corporate mentality sees them for what they are, useful idiots.

The sad thing is, that President Obama is caving in to the Right in congress and to those Republican and Democrat hypocrites who have sold their office to the corporate lobbyist. The question is where are the elected representitives of courage willing to stand up and call it like it is? Are there no statesmen left?

The presidents address to school children at the start of the school year has created a firestorm from the morons of the Right. Folks this is stupid.

"The only way to comprehend what mathematicians mean by infinity is to contemplate the extent of human stupidity."

The president address to school children at the start of the school year has created a firestorm from the morons of the Right. Folks this is stupid!
The president is going to tell school children to study hard, work hard and stay in school, hum this sounds like dangerous stuff. Oh dear, he may use propaganda or socialist brain washing, duh. How stupid do they think we are. The people who hate Obama would hate him no matter what he did, no matter what he said! Because he is black, because he is a democrat, because he has not bought into their perception of Right Wing Christian America, they hate him because that's what they do, they HATE.
He is an example of someone who stayed in school, worked hard and succeeded. What a wonderful example to our children. The fact that a president is going to discuss staying in school and succeeding and the need for education is that bad? No, it is good, but not to the Right , to them this is dangerous for America. But have one of their Right Wing nut case preachers get on TV and talk about why he prayed for the president to be killed, that is okay, he's now a Right Wing hero. There is something wrong with this picture.
The fact that the Right is saying don't listen to the speech, it is propaganda, is stupid. The Right media spokesmen Sean Hannity, O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Limbaugh are Stupid. The right on this is being STUPID, it is really the projection of their own paranoid, psychotic, homophobic, bigoted, sadomasochistic values. These people are full of hate in the name of god and democracy.
