The right wing media has virtually called for the assassination of Obama with their hate speech and coded language of racism

"I'm gonna pray he (Obama) dies and goes to hell".

~Pastor Steven Anderson

President Obama as he approaches the conclusion of his first year in office, has galvanized the wackos in America. From the most stupid to the agenda driven opposition on the Right and far right. The right wing media has virtually called for the assassination of Obama with their hate speech and coded language of racism and support of the "take back America," theme. We can hear it from Rush Limbaugh, to Hannity, O'Reilly to the king of stupid, Glenn Beck. These sick bastards are racists and while they are careful to couch their language they fuel the Fascist like hate mongers on the Right.

On the Right there has been a convergence of interests. Frank Schaeffer said it best. "[T]he reactionary white, rube, uneducated, crazy American far Right, combined with the educated but obtuse neoconservative war mongers, religious Right shills for big business, libertarian Fed Reserve-hating gold bug, gun-loving crazies, child-molesting acquiescent "bishops", frontier loons and evangelical gay-hating flakes found one thing to briefly unite them: their desire to stop an uppity black man from succeeding at all costs!" No argument here, Frank does have a way with words. He also clearly stated the challenges facing President Obama as he took office at the beginning of 2009 that were not of his making but inherited from a disastrous Bush administration.

  • "An ideologically divided country to the point that America was really two countries
  • Two wars; one that was mishandled from the start, the other that was unnecessary and immoral
  • The worst economic crisis since the depression
  • America's standing in the world at the lowest point in history
  • A country that had been misled into accepting the use of torture of prisoners of war
  • A health care system in free fall
  • An educational system in free fall
  • A global environmental crisis of history-altering proportions (about which the Bush administration and the Republicans had done nothing)
  • An impasse between culture warriors from the Right and Left
  • A huge financial deficit inherited from the terminally irresponsible Bush administration…"

Few presidents have faced such an array of challenges and dealt with them with such a cool deliberate demeanor as President Obama. He has moved America away from the disaster that was the Bush administration. America is once again respected around the world. He has pushed for a reform of health care that if passed by congress, although a flawed bill, will begin the process of making sure that all Americans can have access to medical care without going bankrupt. He is addressing Climate Change, resolved the banking crisis, and is addressing the mortgage failures, all issues that the Bush administration made worse or precipitated. The right to criticize the president and our government is a right of every American citizen but what has passed as criticism has become an unprecedented attack on the man based on lies, ignorance, racism, religious intolerance, corporate greed and dishonesty.

Ultimately history will be his judge and given the challenges faced by President Obama he may well go down in history as one of the best presidents in the history of the United States if not one of the most decent and intelligent.

Start yanking out my fingernails or begin roasting my nuts and I will confess to shooting Lincoln or sinking the Titanic,

No exceptional circumstances, whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat of war, internal political instability or any other public emergency, may be invoked as a justification of torture.

~The United Nations Convention Against Torture, which took on the force of federal law in the U.S. when it was ratified by the Senate in 1994

On Friday October 13th 1307 the king of France, Philip the Fair, caused the mass arrest of the Knights Templar throughout France and with the unwilling cooperation of the pope also arrested them throughout most of Europe. They were accused of heresy, homosexuality, disloyalty, and a myriad of other charges. They were tortured for confessions to these crimes. Many died under torture rather than confess to lies. Many confessed including the grand master Jacques de Molay who at the time was in his seventies and stated that he would have confessed to anything under torture. Finally the king wanted de Molay to publicly confess again to crown his triumph but de Molay finally found his courage and publicly denounced the king and withdrew his confession along with the other knights that were present. They were promptly burned at the steak that day. In the face of torture most people would confess to anything. Start yanking out my fingernails or begin roasting my nuts and I will confess to shooting Lincoln or sinking the Titanic, shit I'll confess to shooting Kennedy.

In light of the attempted bombing of a Northwest Airlines passenger jet from Amsterdam to Detroit, the talking head are making a meal out of the event. Karl Rove calls for a military tribunal and criticizes the Obama administration for allowing the federal government to take custody of the perpetrator. Wholly ignoring the fact that it was exactly the same action taken by Bush with the shoe bomber, Richard Reid, who is now serving life in prison in Colorado. Rove calls on the Obama administration to have Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (Umar the idiot) interrogated under enhanced interrogation techniques, another word for torture, declaring that he has no rights and is not a citizen. He also said we could get more information out of him this way.

Karl, the guy confessed to everything when he was taken into custody. He gave up everything he knew. He is not exactly the type of person that Al Qaeda would confide all their plans too. But heck Karl lets torture him anyway, it really is fun, and the Christian thing to do. Let's put pins in his genitals and hook up electric leads to them and shock the shit out of him. That's the American way. How about ripping out his finger and toe nails. Makes me proud to be an American Karl. How about we rip his skin from his body with a pair pliers or we can roast his feet over an hibachi and cook the skin of them until the bones fall of his feet, a good one Karl, used in the inquisition. That one would make the Evangelical Right and Republicans dance with glee. That is definitely a flag waver. Karl with really good torture he will tell you anything, he'll tell you he fucked his cat if you wanted him too. In fact we can solve all crime in America by having him confess to everything.

Why don't we reopen Manzanar, Amache, Gila River, Heart Mountain, Jerome, Minidoka, Poston and Rohwer again and start putting all Muslims living in America citizens or not in them until the war on terror is over, who cares if it takes thirty years or more. These are the camps where we interned Japanese Americans in World War Two. Why not do it again Karl, the Republicans and Evangelical Right would approve. Lets call all Muslims guilty until proven innocent. While they are in the camps we can set up torture squads to torture them to exact confessions on anything we want. Boy is this going to be fun Karl. And over all these camps we will fly that symbol of freedom, Democracy and equality the American flag. It'll will make us all proud to be Americans.

It is no joke what Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab tried to do and had he succeeded the reaction would have been one of extremes. The Right in America would have been vindicated. What we have to understand is it is terror. It is a small group of radicals that commit these acts and we need good intelligence to find them and kill them. We need to continue to step up security and screening at our borders and we need to support military action where it does the most good. What we don't need to do is become worse than our enemy. America has always fought for the underdog, we have always opposed those regimes that used torture such as Sadam's Iraq, Hitlers Germany, etc. We should not become the bad guy. Let us not become what they call us, the Great Satin. We need not allow the baser elements in America dictate our actions. We are a country of compassion, decency, hope and courage. That is what we are fighting to preserve and our enemy wants to destroy. We need to keep to our values. Yes, fight against those who would harm us and kill them on the battlefield and prosecute them if caught. Torture, no it is not our way. If we compromise our values then we are can no longer claim to be a nation of law and have become less than out enemies and they win.

Recommended Book: Truth, Torture and the American Way by Jennifer Harbury

"Jennifer Harbury’s investigation into torture began when her husband disappeared in Guatemala in 1992; she told the story of his torture and murder in Searching for Everardo. For over a decade since, Harbury has used her formidable legal, research, and organizing skills to press for the U.S. government’s disclosure of America’s involvement in harrowing abuses in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. A draft of this book had just been completed when the first photos from Abu Ghraib were published; tragically, many of Harbury’s deepest fears about America’s own abuses were graphically confirmed by those horrific images.

This urgently needed book offers both well-documented evidence of the CIA’s continuous involvement in torture tactics since the 1970s and moving personal testimony from many of the victims. Most important, Harbury provides solid, convincing arguments against the use of torture in any circumstances: not only because it is completely inconsistent with all the basic values Americans hold dear, but also because it has repeatedly proved to be ineffective: Again and again, “information” obtained through these gruesome tactics proves unreliable or false. Worse, the use of torture by U.S. client states, allies, and even by our own operatives, endangers our citizens and especially our troops deployed internationally."

can anyone who visits Auschwitz ever forget what a twisted ideology can do to a country in the name of some perceived greater good.

When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”
-Sinclair Lewis

I have been to Auschwitz Concentration Camp. It was a singularly intense experience. It was 1994 and I was a member of the United States Karate Team competing in the Fudokan World Karate Championship in Zakopane, Poland. On the day of the competition I pulled a calf muscle in the form event and was done for the day. On our day off we decided to take a trip to Auschwitz, a group of us piled into a bus and took the hour or so drive to the camp. It was a strange feeling to see those infamous gates and to walk through them. As I walked about the camp the enormity of what took place there was overwhelming. I visited many of the buildings, including the gas chamber and crematorium. I saw a room full of glasses and the brick wall where many prisoners were lined up and shot. Most moving was the building dedicated to the plight of the Jews. The dormitories were, if memory serves two storied, they were full of artifacts, photographs and personal belongings. At one point while walking through the building I remember feeling overwhelmed and I had to get out of the building and into the fresh air. It was a feeling of overwhelming dread.

All this was done in the name of the Third Reich by a society, a nation of people that had bought into the idea of the master race. They had believed in their redeemer and in his mad demonic ideas. It took a world war to end the madness and the world has never been the same. The Jewish people can never forget and neither can anyone who visits Auschwitz ever forget what a twisted ideology can do to a country in the name of some perceived greater good.

Today in America we have the rise of the new ideology of madness and it is the Evangelical Christian movement with their crazy charismatic leadership. They preach the gospel of hate. They represent a real and present danger to America. If they were ignored as they should be and consigned to the wackos of society that have to be tolerated it would not be a problem. That is not the case, America is acting like a town that is trying to accommodate and appease the village idiot, so everybody does everything the village idiot wants them to do. We have senators and congressmen taking these people seriously and making laws based on the leaders of these groups and their agendas. Evidence their own

words; James Dobson said "God has called us to be His representatives in our nation and in our world. Select candidates who represent your views and work for their election." Pastor John Hagee said "I believe that the Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans...I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they are -- were recipients of the judgment of God for that...There was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came. And the promise of that parade was that it was going to reach a level of sexuality never demonstrated before in any of the other Gay Pride parades.... The Bible teaches that when you violate the law of God, that God brings punishment sometimes before the day of judgment." These men have been advisors to presidents. Senators and congressmen seek their support and do their bidding. It is time that congress repudiate these advocates of hate, intolerance and bigotry. We are a liberal society, that embraces diversity and inclusion. We are a society of toleration and a society of freedom of speech and religious belief. We are also a country with people of different shades of color and cultures and languages. All these things they hate. Their agenda is a theocracy, one that is based on their interpretation of the bible. Randell Terry Founder of Operation Rescue said, "I want you to just let a wave of intolerance wash over you.I want you to let a wave of hatred wash over you. Yes, hate is good ... Our goal is a Christian nation. We have a biblical duty, we are called by God to conquer this country. We don't want equal time. We don't want pluralism." Jerry Falwell said, "We must fight against those radical minorities who are trying to remove God from our textbooks, Christ from our nation. We must take back what is rightfully ours." (Moral Majority Sermon, March 1993) "I hope to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be."

These Evangelical preachers preach a dangerous message to their flock. They preach a form of sedition and anti-Americanism under the guise of patriotism. Like the Third Reich their members are mostly white poor working class people with little education and are mostly excluded from the main social fabric of the nation. They buy into a message that appeals to their fears of being left behind by a society they don't fully understand. A society they see as increasingly diverse, where women, gays, people of color demand equality. The message they listen too is one of exclusivity and a special connection to God, a God that is on their side. They have the message that they will be the ones to get into heaven and that all the rest of the world will be damned. They have a leader they can back who shares their values, Sarah Palin with her supporters in the Right wing media Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity. There is a danger here that these preachers will wrap themselves in the flag and if they could they would take away our freedoms in the name of God and America. Ultimately they need to be seen as they are, and called on it and not given a pass.

Frank Schaeffer former Evangelical leader blows the lid of the Evangelical Right.

Recommended Book a second time:

Republican Gomorrah by Max Blumenthal, an excerpt;

"Fromm’s analysis in Escape from Freedom provides an eerie but prescient description of the authoritarian mindset driving the movement that has substantially taken over the modern Republican Party: the Christian right. Over the last five years, I interviewed hundreds of the Christian right’s leaders and activists, attended dozens of its rallies and conferences, listened to countless hours of its radio programs, and sat in movement-oriented houses of worship where no journalists were permitted. As I explored the contours of the movement, I discovered a culture of personal crisis lurking behind the histrionics and expressions of social resentment. This culture is the mortar that bonds leaders and followers together.

Inside the movement initiates refer to it cryptically as “The Family,” an exclusive sect. The Christian right as a whole is called “the pro-Family” movement, and movement allies are known as “friends of The Family.” In an actual family, blood ties are required; however, joining the Christian right requires little more than becoming “born again,” a process of confession, conversion, and submission to a strict father figure.

The movement’s Jesus is the opposite of the prince of peace. He is a stern, overtly masculine patriarch charging into the fray with his sword raised against secular foes; he is “the head of a dreadful company, mounted on a white horse, with a double-edged sword, his robe dipped in blood,” according to movement propagandist Steve Arterburn. Mark Driscoll, a pastor who operates an alternative Christian rock venue from his church, stirs the souls of twenty- something evangelical males with visions of “Ultimate Fighting Jesus.” This same musclebound god-man starred in Mel Gibson’s blood-drenched The Passion of the Christ, enduring bone-crushing punishment at the hands of Jews and pagans for two hours of unrelieved pornographic masochism.

A portrait of virility and violence, the movement’s omnipotent macho Jesus represents the mirror inversion of the weak men who necessitated his creation. As Fromm explained, “the lust for power is not rooted in strength but in weakness [italics in original]. It is the expression of the individual self to stand alone and live. It is the desperate attempt to gain secondary strength where genuine strength is lacking.”

The movement’s macho Jesus provided purpose to Tom DeLay, a dallying, alcoholic Texas legislator transformed through evangelical religion from “Hot Tub Tommy” into a dictatorial House majority leader known as “The Hammer.” Macho Jesus was the god of Ted Haggard, a closet homosexual born-again and charismatic megachurch leader, risen to head of the National Association of Evangelicals, preaching the gospel of spiritual warfare and anti-gay crusades. And he was the god of Howard F. Ahmanson Jr., an eccentric millionaire whose inheritance of massive wealth literally drove him mad, prompting his institutionalization, who found relief as one of the far right’s most reliable financial angels. Macho Jesus even transformed the serial killer Ted Bundy, murderer and rapist of dozens of women, who became a poster child for anti-pornography activists with his nationally televised death row confessional."

We sold out to business and the banks and have failed to keep the promises of our youth

The earth we abuse and the living things we kill will, in the end, take their revenge; for in exploiting their presence we are diminishing our future. ~Marya Mannes, More in Anger, 1958

Copenhagen is over and no real meaningful consensus was reached. There was a lack of leadership from the major powers. It was a failure of will. What was needed was a total ban on the use of coal and a move away from the growth of the fossil fuel industry. Without America taking the lead it just ain't going to happen. We need real change in America, because that is where is has to happen? What we need is for the youth of America to take the lead. We need the youth on every college campus in America to mobilize and, like the VietNam war protesters of the seventies, change the direction of America. It is they who will be the inheritors of the disaster that we have exacerbated. My generation, the VietNam generation a generation that fought for change and an end to the war, has failed this generation. We sold out to business and the banks and have failed to keep the promises of our youth. It is no longer in our hands. There is hope because the youth of the world have begun to take notice as evidence of the protests in Copenhagen and around the world. It is up to them to take bold action and effect change, make their governments hear their voices, make industry responsible for its actions. They must demand change, fight for change and create change if they are to have a livable world.

The senate has finally passed the health care bill. It is a flawed bill. It lacks a public option which is crucial and without a public option it fails to meet the needs of the American people. If the final bill has a mandate that requires everyone to buy health care without the public option then it is a failure. It becomes a windfall for the health insurance industry. The next step will be reconciliation between the house and the senate, that will be the much awaited compromise and produce a final bill. Only time will tell if the final product achieves true health care reform.

Storms of My Grandchildren: The Truth About the Coming Climate Catastrophe and Our Last Chance to Save Humanity -by James Hansen

"In Storms of My Grandchildren, Dr. James Hansen—the nation’s leading scientist on climate issues—speaks out for the first time with the full truth about global warming: The planet is hurtling even more rapidly than previously acknowledged to a climatic point of no return. Although the threat of human-caused climate change is now widely recognized, politicians have failed to connect policy with the science, responding instead with ineffectual remedies dictated by special interests. Hansen shows why President Obama’s solution, cap-and-trade, which Al Gore has signed on to, won’t work; why we must phase out all coal, and why 350 ppm of carbon dioxide is a goal we must achieve if our children and grandchildren are to avoid global meltdown and the storms of the book’s title. This urgent manifesto bucks conventional wisdom (including the Kyoto Protocol) and is sure to stir controversy, but Hansen—whose climate predictions have come to pass again and again, beginning in the 1980s when he first warned Congress about global warming—is the single most credible voice on the subject worldwide.

Hansen paints a devastating but all-too-realistic picture of what will happen in the near future, mere years and decades from now, if we follow the course we’re on. But he is also an optimist, showing that there is still time to do what we need to save the planet. Urgent, strong action is needed, and this book, released to coincide with the Copenhagen Conference in December 2009, will be key in setting the agenda going forward to create a groundswell, a tipping point, to save humanity—and our grandchildren—from a dire fate more imminent than we had supposed." They are self serving dirtbags who sit in congress who should serve the people

I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a door mat or a prostitute. ~Rebecca West, "Mr Chesterton in Hysterics: A Study in Prejudice," The Clarion, 14 Nov 1913, reprinted in The Young Rebecca, 1982

Women's rights, abortion, freedom to choose and equality in all areas of life are all issues that generations of women have fought for and these hard fought gains are now threatened by the Republican Right Wing extremists and Evangelical Christian Right movement. This movement wants to turn back the clock to to bad old days; where women knew their place, the kitchen and the bedroom, and obeyed their husbands. The Evangelical movement spearheaded by James Dobson and John Hagee have become the American version of the Taliban in their assault on women rights in America. They see women as inferior and would make them virtually 2nd class citizens. Women across America have benefited from the women of courage who fought for women's rights against the entrenched establishment but women like Sarah Palin, and Carrie Prejean would help turn back the clock, they have become the not too bright spokes persons in support of the anti-women rights Evangelical movement while they benefit from the sacrifices of better women than them. The Republicans Right and Evangelical Right Wing have screamed for the government to stay out of their health care yet they want to control the bodies of women and would deny them the freedom to make decisions for themselves.

President Obama recently signed an anti-rape amendment into law proposed by Sen. Al Franken’s (D-MN). The bill would allow women who work for U. S. contractors who's right were violated or who are victims of crimes the right to sue their employers. This stems from the case of, "Jamie Leigh Jones, who was gang-raped by her co-workers while working for Halliburton/KBR in Baghdad. Many Republicans opposed the legislation — saying it was an unnecessary attack on their allies in the defense contracting business — and faced intense political blowback over their positions". These Republicans, many of them supporters of the extreme Right Evangelical and friends of Halliburton, would deny women who were assaulted from exercising their rights for legal redress of grievances, thereby denying them due process of law. That these thirty Republicans, named below, are upset that the public is incensed about their callous attempt to deny women protection under the law is incredible. They are self serving dirtbags who sit in congress who should serve the people not their masters in business and the Evangelical Right Wing Christian hypocrites.

American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America by Chris Hedges From Publishers Weekly

"The f-word crops up in the most respectable quarters these days. Yet if the provocative title of this exposé by Hedges (War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning)—sounds an alarm, the former New York Times foreign correspondent takes care to employ his terms precisely and decisively. As a Harvard Divinity School graduate, his investigation of the Christian Right agenda is even more alarming given its lucidity. Citing the psychology and sociology of fascism and cults, including the work of German historian Fritz Stern, Hedges draws striking parallels between 20th-century totalitarian movements and the highly organized, well-funded "dominionist movement," an influential theocratic sect within the country's huge evangelical population. Rooted in a radical Calvinism, and wrapping its apocalyptic, vehemently militant, sexist and homophobic vision in patriotic and religious rhetoric, dominionism seeks absolute power in a Christian state. Hedges's reportage profiles both former members and true believers, evoking the particular characteristics of this American variant of fascism. His argument against what he sees as a democratic society's suicidal tolerance for intolerant movements has its own paradoxes. But this urgent book forcefully illuminates what many across the political spectrum will recognize as a serious and growing threat to the very concept and practice of an open society." common decency. That is what is missing in the health care debate

A government, for protecting business only, is but a carcass, and soon falls by its own corruption and decay.
-Amos Bronson Alcott; Teacher, Writer and Philosopher

Howard Dean is still rocking the Democrats health care boat. He has pointed out that the health care bill is flawed and punishes older people especially if they have a pre-existing condition. They can be charged up to 300% more than younger healthier people. This virtually shuts them out of health care as it will come down to food or insurance. A public option would have made the difference. The fact that the bill has "protectionist legislation" for the health insurance companies makes it a bad bill.
What it all comes down to is common decency. That is what is missing in the health care debate. The Republican's mean spiritedness is obvious as is the attitude of the Tea Baggers. To want to deny millions of fellow Americans the opportunity for health care at a reasonable price and not to want to improve the quality of life of those Americans is shameful. To support the interests of the health insurance companies who funded the whole Tea Bagger movement and bought off half of the government to protect their interests is clearly a disgrace.
It is sad that so many Americans were brainwashed with the collusion of Fox, made up white man, News into acting against their own self interest. What they don't understand is that they will be the ones that will be eventually victimized by those health insurance companies.
The health insurance companies have no shame or conscience when it come to health care. When it comes to health care all Americans should be covered and no one should be denied. Every life is precious and to deny people when they are in need, for the sake of profit, is criminal and immoral.
Health care should be part of a social contract with society and maybe we don't need a health insurance industry that only cares about the billions in profit made on the backs of the sick and needy. Maybe it is time to eliminate the profit motive. Total nationalized health care. The cry would be socialized medicine, which is bull shit, in truth it would be human decency. You could still have a private plan if you want it but in fact everyone would be covered and it would be totally democratic. Everyone would be covered and everyone would pay a fair rate. But who am I kidding, it's a pipe dream. Our government has been bought and paid for by big business, they own it lock stock and barrel.
Dr. Howard Dean has stated the facts and called like it is. He is not running for office, he is wealthy and has no worries so he can tell the truth. The truth that the Democrats, the Republicans, the lying despicable Fox News, Tea Bagger hypocrites and the health insurance companies don't want you to know. That truth is that we have the most inefficient and the most expensive health care system in the world and it ranks behind almost every country in the western world. As pointed out in my November 21st post "Statistics from the CIA World Fact Book lists the United States at 50th for life expectancy, behind such countries as Japan, Canada, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Israel, Spain, Norway, Germany pretty much all of Europe. We also rank 44th on infant mortality behind such countries as Cuba, the European Union, Italy, Greece, Ireland, Canada, U.K., New Zealand, Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, South Korea, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Czech Republic, Norway, Finland, Hong Kong, Japan, Sweden and more.
The Commonwealth Fund in a survey of health care costs by country found that "while American health care is the most expensive it constantly underperforms", when compared to other countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden, and the U.K."

Embarrassing but true, it is time for a real change but is there the will?

They debate and fiddle about health care but they don't care about Americans who die, go bankrupt or are denied health care coverage.

Courage Award

The Courage Award goes to the American service men and women who go in harms way in service to their nation. They unselfishly stand on the frontiers of our Democracy to defend our freedoms and allow us to sleep safely in our beds. They deserve the Courage Award for their sacrifices and commitment to America. They are each ordinary Americans who do the extraordinary.

Man of The Year

Bill Moyers an ordained minister and former presidential aid to Lyndon B. Johnson, is our Man of The Year for his commitment to the the truth and journalistic excellence. Moyers has spent his life examining issues that effect America and the world. He has been critical of the make believe media that has arisen in America that twists the truth for it's own agenda. He has stated that the press must be free to question and probe the issues and ferret out the true facts. One of his concerns has been the closure of news papers and the weakening of the fifth estate. Essential to a Democracy is a robust free press. He has been criticized and attacked for his honesty and unfailing dedication to what journalism is and should be and he has been critical of both the left and the Right. He is a voice that America needs and voice that speaks with a deliberate clarity to the issues.

Woman of The Year

Dr. Aung San Suu Kyi is our woman of the year. Dr. Aung San Suu Kyi holds a PhD from the University of London and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, was elected prime Minister of Burma in 1990 but was subsequently detained by the military authorities before taking office and has remained under house arrest for more than fourteen years out of the last twenty. She continues to suffer at the hands of the military junta that rules the country without a mandate from the people. Aung San Suu Kyi remains a symbol to her people of resistance and courage in the face of a totalitarian dictatorship with their tanks and guns.

Book of the year

Max Blumenthal's Republican Gomorrah, Inside the Movement That Shattered The Party. Blumenthal's book is an inside look at the evangelical movement that has take over the Republican Party. The movement that forced John McCain to accept evangelical Sarah Palin as his running mate and pretty much sabotaged his campaign. Blumenthal examines the beginning of the evangelical Right movement, its growth and its take over of the Republican Party. He names those Republican politicians that have sucked up to James Dobson, John Hagee etc, and bought into the evangelical agenda of intolerance and hate and made it their cause-celeb in congress. For anyone trying to make sense of where the Republican Party, the party of Lincoln, has gone this is the book to read.
